Historical Background of Turkish Coffee and How to Prepare Turkish Coffee

Before talking about the nowadays’ machines, it would be much better to look back to the history. When the coffee was brought to Turkey, it was more in the palace rather than the public of course. The Sultans, Pashas favored the coffee too much and suddenly coffee drinking was a big ceremony with all its equipment. By the way the first Sultan to drink the coffee was Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, as his Yemen Governor, namely Ozdemir Pasha, brought the coffee. Following the palaces, courts and mansions finally coffee was also popular in houses. I mean it was available for public as well. Coffee was roasted not commercially but at homes just for the local use.  So the first roasters were just pans made of steel or brass. Later on we can see some charcoal drum roasters.
Drinking coffee in Palace was really a big ceremony but coffee also created more humble but still efficient ceremony in the houses too. Turkish coffee was and still is, served with water and Turkish delight. Water helps cleaning your mouth and enabling you to have the real taste of coffee and enjoy it utmost. Delight was served as the coffee was made mostly without sugar. Below you can see two of my favorite videos on YouTube about how to prepare Turkish coffee. Later on I will talk about the history of Coffee Houses in Turkey and their extension to Europe.

From Roasting Pan to Touchscreen Roasting Machines

Turkey is known as a Tea drinker country however Coffee has a bigger and older role in the culture of Turkish people. This can be a subject of another post because here I want to talk about another issue. As widely known Ethiopia is accepted as the birth place of coffee and that is true without any suspicion. I am also sure that nobody can deny the role of Turkey introducing the coffee worldwide. Keeping this in mind, I find quite natural the fact that why Turkey has many coffee roaster manufacturers. Turkish people have been, dealing with coffee (I mainly mean roasting) since the 15th Century. (Below you can see some pictures of traditional roasting equipment). Thanks to this long history, knowledge and love, roasters have been developed with emerging technology and craftsmanship. In the worldwide market there are many roaster manufacturers and many of them are Turkish inevitably. If you need more details about these manufacturers please email me or keep looking for the new posts where I would like to look through all. Email: osmanmerdan@gmail.com
